When developing the giant Luna public art installation for Shenzhen Bay Mall, our biggest challenge was creating a massive structure that delivered a truly authentic “woven straw and plush” texture while withstanding harsh outdoor conditions.Instead of using fragile natural straw, we developed our own proprietary high-simulation flocking sculpture technology. By combining high-strength synthetic fibers with a durable PU substrate and incorporating UV-9 grade stabilizers and hydrophobic coatings, the final installation not only visually replicates the rough, natural texture of cotton, linen, and dry grass, but also offers a soft, luxurious plush feel. Most importantly, it completely eliminates common issues such as mold, mildew, and color fading in humid environments.
For these towering, wind-exposed installations — including the giant bow and the oversized “Looking Up Cat” sculpture — structural safety was non-negotiable. We engineered an internal steel framework using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for load-bearing optimization. Critical components were fabricated with 304 stainless steel and hot-dip galvanized for superior corrosion resistance. Each piece underwent rigorous 12-level wind pressure simulation testing before leaving the factory.
In terms of detailing, we applied advanced CNC sectional cutting combined with meticulous hand-reverse flocking techniques. Whether shaping the curved metal bow or creating seamless fur transitions on the cat sculpture, our “invisible seamless stitching” craftsmanship ensures that even under natural daylight, no joints are visible. The final surface achieves an impressive 90% fidelity to the original design.
